Vitamin D helps us absorb calcium and phosphorus and therefore plays an important role in the health of our bones. The main source of vitamin D is from exposure of our skin to sunlight. However, many of us don’t get adequate exposure to sun especially in the winter months so food sources and other supplementation may play an important role.
It is important to have a varied and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Health benefits of vitamin D
Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth, muscle function and normal function of the immune system. Vitamin D also contributes to normal absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D helps to reduce the risk of falling associated with postural instability and muscle weakness*. Falling is a risk factor for bone fractures among people 60 years of age and older.
